Baking

This morning I was looking at a blog and this lady had made molasses cookies and I thought that would be good with a cup of coffee...

Well, all I really wanted was one cookie so I should have went to the store and bought a package of Grandma's Molasses cookies. They are the best. But for some crazy reason I decided I would make a batch and since I had to STAND by the stove while they were cooking I made a few other things. I made some peanut butter cookies because I ran across my old recipe and they are excellent, and I made some wackes for Bill because Kimmie is coming over after work today and Bill loves these cookies. Then I decided I would cook some beans and cornbread. I have one last sheet of cookies in the oven and if they do not burn I have has a successful baking morning.

Some people love to bake cookies and I always think they are so much trouble. People look at me making bread and say, "It takes all day." well, yes it does but it takes maybe 20 minutes to stir it up...ten minutes to make it into rolls....and about 30 minutes to cook ....the rest of the cooking can be done sitting on the couch! Unlike baking cookies where I have to stand over the stove to make sure they are only in there about 7 minutes and you have to keep preparing more baking sheets of them because even though I only want one cookie you just can't bake that.

Mike has a Sister-In-Law, Valorie, that makes beautiful decorated sugar cookies to give away every Christmas. These are not made like I make decorated sugar cookies, I frost circles and add sprinkles, and even that is a lot of trouble to me. No Valorie makes cut out sugar cookies and may pipe three or four different colors on each cookie. That is way to much trouble for me and I can not figure out a way to make them sitting on the couch...

I think, the truth be told, I do not like making cookies because mama hardly ever made them and they are just not a comfort food to me. Mama sure could make bread though. I think of home every time I make it. The same is true for beans and cornbread. I would have to say I would rather eat beans and cornbread over any other food. The smell just reminds me of my child hood. It is true we were so poor we could afford little else to eat, but I always felt secure there on the home place. I hope Fleta still has that feeling.

I have 2 favorite foods. Beans and cornbread and chicken and noodles. I guess I like comfort food also. But my mom didn't make them a lot growing up. Makes me wonder why they are my favorite.
